2014 Firearms and Self-Defense Seminars


All seminars will occur at the Hawthorn Suites
in Bloomington, IL by the Cracker Barrel

Seminar times are from 6pm to 9:30pm


Double Tap Academy is dedicated to helping law-abiding citizens gain knowledge and skills to safely, efficiently, and legally operate their firearms.  There are many choices that firearm owners must consider.  Through a series of low-cost seminars we will provide information that can help attendees make informed choices.

We are excited to announce the following upcoming seminars:


Introduction to Pistols - $30   <REGISTER>

This seminar is designed for individuals interested in learning more about pistols.  If you are new to pistol shooting, interested in starting to shoot, or are obtaining a concealed carry permit but don't know what firearm, holster, or ammunition to purchase this is the seminar for you.  Specific information will include:

      • Pistol Safety.
      • Pistol Storage.
      • Pistol Transportation.
      • The Types of Pistols and the advantages/disadvantages of each.
        • Revolvers
        • Semi-Automatics
      • Considerations in purchasing a pistol.
      • Considerations for purchasing a holster.
      • Types of ammunition and what type to use.
      • How to practice.
      • Shooting for the first time.
      • Selecting an instructor or coach.
      • Pistol Cleaning.

Intro to the Legal Aspects of Firearms and Self-Defense - $30  <REGISTER>

This seminar is designed for individuals interested in learning more about firearm laws and specifically the judicial use of force.  If you plan to have a firearm in the house for self-defense or if you plan to obtain a concealed carry permit, this is a must attend course.  Many instructors do not adequately understand this topic and therefore are not adequately educating their CCW students.  Specific information will include:

      • Illinois laws around storage, transportation, the FOID card, and an IL CCW Permit
      • The Castle Doctrine and Stand your Ground Laws
      • Criminal vs Civil Cases
      • The 5 Principles of the Law of Self-Defense
      • Defending Oneself, Others, and Property
      • Warning Shots
      • Steps of a Criminal Trial
      • The Judicial Use of Force Criteria

Advanced Legal Aspects of Firearms and Self Defense - $50    <REGISTER>

This seminar is designed for individuals who have a decent understanding of the judicial system or have taken Double Tap's Intoduction to Legal Aspects seminar and want to continue their education and better understand how to develop a Legally-sound Self-Defense Strategy.  This seminar is designed to prepare the armed citizen to survive physically and mentally the battles of a self-defense icident.  In this seminar, participants will gain an understanding of:

      • Review of the Judicial Use of Force Criteria
      • Selecting an Attorney
      • The Reasonable Person Standard
      • Preparing before an incident and why it is best to avoid if possible
      • Performing during an incident
      • Interacting with the 911 Operator
      • Interacting with Police
      • Being arrested
      • What to expect after the incident is over

Strategies for Building a Self-Defense and Safety Plan - $50     <REGISTER>

This seminar is designed for individuals who wish to build a Self-Defense and Safety Plan that can be used in the home, in the workplace, in a business, or in a public setting.  The highest chances of success occur when prior planning occurs.  This seminar discusses items to be considered and choices that should be made.

      • Determining what must be protected.
      • Establishing a Safety Barrier.
      • Considerations for Creating a Safe Room.
      • Establishing a plan when by yourself, with a spouse, or with the entire family.
        • Within the home
        • Away from Home
      • Tools to consider:  firearm, pepperspray, flashlight, & cell phone.
      • Creating code words for communication.
      • Fortifying your home
      • Identifying escape routes.
      • Utilizing cover and concealment
      • Clearing techniques
      • Working with others
      • Interacting with 911 and law enforcement
